The Pyracantha Outdoor Bonsai Tree Can’t Handle the Cold

Many outdoor bonsai trees are hardy and can handle the cold weather, but the Pyracantha bonsai is not one of these. If you’re keeping your bonsai trees in an environment that is fairly warm, the Pyracantha will be find, but if you are growing a bonsai garden in an area where it gets below five degrees Celsius or 28 degrees Fahrenheit, you won’t be able to keep it outdoors. Instead, you’ll need to keep it inside in a cool area such as a garage. The Pyracantha bonsai is worth this extra trouble, however, because it looks incredibly beautiful when it grows berries during the spring season.

Bonsai, including the Pyracantha, have very small root systems. This means that they’ve got to be watered frequently. However, you don’t want to water them too much. Instead, you’ll need to watch how much water is in their pot and water them as needed. You also need to watch the sun—bonsai are vulnerable to excessive heat and to direct sunlight. Because of this, you need to keep them in indirect light most of the time. Growing bonsai outdoors may actually make them experience some seasonal changes, too, so you may see some interesting differences between Pyracantha kept indoors and those bonsai grown outdoors the entire season.
